What’s New for the 2018 Nissan Altima?
Closing in on the end of its fifth production cycle, the Nissan Altima has earned its place in the top tier of the midsize sedan market–with constant evolutions in efficiency, tech features, and driving dynamics. For 2018, the Altima is available in five trims: the 2.5 SR, the Midnight Edition, the 2.5 SV, the 2.5 SL, and the 3.5 SL. The “2.5” designation refers to a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that pumps out 179 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, while the “3.5” designation refers to a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 270 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are hitched to a continuous variable transmission for a smoother driving feel and better fuel efficiency than traditional gearboxes. (Paddle shifters and a manual shift mode are exclusive to the 3.5 SL.) The Midnight Edition is simply an SR variant that comes with special features like Charcoal Sport Cloth seats, black rear spoiler and outside mirrors, and 18-inch black-painted aluminum wheels.
Seating up to five people, the 2018 Nissan Altima provides 101.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, with the trunk yielding 15.4 cubic feet of trunk space. Front seating on the sedan includes a driver’s seat with 8-way power adjustability and 2-way power lumbar support. The sports-oriented SR trim level (i.e., 2.5 SR and Midnight Edition) gets racing-style seats. And leather seat trim, a 4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, and front-seat and steering-wheel heating ability go on the luxury-oriented SL variants (i.e., 2.5 SL and 3.5 SL). Base-level comfort and convenience features include a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, a 4.3-inch screen called Advanced Drive-Assist Display to lessen distraction when driving, Siri Eyes Free for voice control, remote keyless entry, hands-free text messaging ability, push-button engine start, and a six-speaker audio system with a 5-inch color monitor. Nissan adds a remote start-and-stop system once you upgrade to the Midnight Edition, and the SV gets additional dual-zone automatic climate control and a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. Auto-dimming on the rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, and a nine-speaker Bose sound system are exclusive to the SL trim level. And NissanConnect (which includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone-based control), 7-inch color touchscreen navigation, and a front and rear sonar system are exclusive to the 3.5 SL. For safety, the 2018 Altima has electronic vehicle stability control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, an anti-theft system with engine immobilization, automated emergency braking and forward collision warning (which, for the first time, is standard on all models), and eight airbags. Added on the SV and SL trim levels are blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.
